| Ten
things you can do to improve the psychology
effect of your space |
Where we live and work effects who we are. Our
experience of place influences our interpersonal
behavior. And we can change our emotions by
changing the environment.
Interior design can be seen as social engineering.
But first of all it is important to set the
correct intention for your space. How do we
want them to interact? That is a design question.
Establishing behavior through design of the
home and workplace is the necessary thing to
do. Great interior designers take care to design
environments where people interact in harmonious
ways.
Provide
safety. Primarily
we need a feeling of security. Walls need doors
that both open and close.
Use
of Sun Light.
We have a biological response to sunlight. The
vitamin D from sunlight improves our sense of
well being.
Provide
references to nature
- flowers, paintings etc....
Use of soothing colors. Biologically some colors
such as red are alarming and blues and greens
are soothing. But many colors have specific
cultural meanings and we must be attuned to
the cultural group that we wish to effect.
Incorporate a curved architectural
line in every
room for a more soothing effect.
Provide a place to congregate and
share our feelings. A space that encourages communication
and understanding - a hearth area.
Provide
for privacy : a place to create,
a place for intimacy and passion.
Provide
a place to dream, pray, reflect
or meditate. A place of peace, comfort and relaxation
- a soft place to rest our bones. A place to sleep.
Provide
for the need of the environment
to reflect our status or the status that we wish
to project. And our need to be seen as stylish
and unique individuals.
Provide
for the need of
the environment to project our values.
If any one of these elements are not met it can
lead to psychological distress. An exploration
of where we live is often an indicator of where
we are stuck. If we want a more spiritual life
but we are living in a closet it is quite possible
we need to look at our environment as the cause
of our malaise and do something about where and
how we are living.
